This is the amazingly warm opening song for the film, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag by Pradeep Sarkar, a fascinating blend of musical, melodrama and feminist fairy tale which shows Bollywood’s moral universe in transition. The film follows the fortunes of Badki (Rani Mukherjee) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma), sisters from a genteel Benares family with money problems and predatory relatives. The video clip manages to capture the magical timeless atmosphere of Benares (Varanasi) in such an extraordinary way that it could have easily been a production of the Indian Tourist Department to promote Uttar Pradesh abroad as well as at home.
