calm among its turbulent neighbours and an
ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best
places to experience the tropics with minimal
impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means
great surfing, beaches galore and a climate

Belize, is so very laid-back it's almost comatose. Dabbling its toes
in the Caribbean Sea, this tiny nation has more in common with its island
neighbours than the fiery volatility of Central America - its history is
thoroughly coup-free. Soak up the glorious natural wonders and rich cultural
history. |

SALVADOR |
El Salvador. Its only name still evokes images
of the brutal civil war fought throughout the 1980s, but the bloodshed is long
over - the volcanic landscape remains the most turbulent aspect of El Salvador.
Friendly locals like to chat, diverting your gaze from the gangs and refugees to
beautiful broad valleys. |

The
seven nations of Central America occupy a land area about a quarter
of the size of Mexico. Despite its diminutive size, this narrow
strip is a remarkably varied slice of the globe boasting an array of
landscapes and attractions, from ancient Aztec and Mayan
ruins to the grand Panama Canal. You can scale
Mayan pyramids, worship the sun on palm-fringed shores and chill out
in the shade of a smoldering volcano. Whatever your passion, Central
America is jam-packed with possibilities. This
