AMAZON RIVER |
The Amazon River is the world's
second longest river. Only the
Nile, in Africa, is longer. The
Amazon however, at any one point in time
has the highest amount of water flowing
down it. No other river even comes close.
The Amazon produces approximately 20
percent of all the water that the
world's rivers pour into the oceans on
its own.

BRASILIA |
Brasilia,
a capital created ex nihilo in
the centre of the country in 1956, was a
landmark in the history of town
planning. Urban planner Lucio Costa and
architect Oscar Niemeyer intended that
every element, from the layout of the districts, to the symmetry of the
buildings themselves, should be in
harmony with the city's overall design.

IGUAZU FALLS |
Iguazú Falls are the result of a volcanic
eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. They are taller than
Niagara Falls and twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe shape
over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, These details do nothing to describe
the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water thundering down 269
feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to
say Poor Niagara. |

MINAS GERAIS |
Minas Gerais
Founded at the end of the 17th century, Ouro
Preto (Black Gold) was the focal point of the
gold rush and Brazil's golden age in the 18th
century. With the exhaustion of the gold mines
in the 19th century, the city's influence
declined but many churches, bridges and
fountains remain as a testimony to its past
prosperity and the exceptional talent of the
Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho. |

THE COAST |
Beach Culture. In many places in
Brazil the beach is a religion that competes with
Catholicism for the hearts and minds of the people. No self-respecting
carioca (inhabitant of
Rio de Janeiro)
would let more than a fortnight pass without hitting the sands. It’s one of the
few things in Brazil that is open to the poor as much as the rich and the only
thing that tells them apart is the designer bikinis and expensive haircuts. |
|
For
hundreds of years, Brazil has symbolised
the great escape into a primordial,
tropical paradise, igniting the Western
imagination like no other South American
country. From the mad passion of
Carnaval to the immensity of the dark
Amazon, it is a country of mythic
proportions. Perhaps it's not quite the
Eden of popular imagination, but it's
still a land of staggering beauty. There
are stretches of unexplored rainforest,
islands with pristine tropical beaches,
and endless rivers. And there are the
people themselves, who delight the
visitor with their energy and joy. |
